It is narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Majaah (1406) from Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “One prayer in my mosque is better than one thousand prayers elsewhere, except al-Masjid al-Haraam, and one prayer in al-Masjid al-Haraam is better than one hundred thousand prayers elsewhere.

Red reflecting the colour of royalty was chosen as the colour for carpets of the Haramain. The red carpets have been around since around the year 2000 if not earlier. It was only in 2014 that Haramain decided to change the carpets from red to green. Makkah no longer uses red. Most of Madinah now uses green, with the exception of the court yard where you may see red carpets outside. The carpet still holds the scent from the time of usage. As you can imagine it has been prayed on by millions if pilgrims over the years!
